A COMPETITION which has raised thousands of pounds for good causes has come to an end – with the final sum donated to St Michael's Hospice.

The St Owens Charity Crib started in the early 1980s and originally raised money for the local Home for the Blind.

When this closed, the funds were then given to the Hereford Blind Association and, over the last three years, the Air Ambulance.

Peter West, who took over as secretary 26 years ago, said: "When we started all those years ago in the old Bricklayers Arms, which is now The Victory, we had 40 teams, many out in the country areas.

"In the latter years only 10 clubs took part and sadly none from the city teams.

"So this year, with team crib numbers decreasing, sadly the decision has been taken to end the fundraising event."

He thanked all the competition's sponsors and all the teams who took part.

"Last but by no means least, Phyllis Weaver, the treasurer for the past 20 years, and her husband Derek, for their help and support during this time," he added.

A cheque of £700 was presented to St Michael's Hospice this week.
