THE Worcestershire Golf Club hosted three matchplay finals on a glorious day in Malvern Wells.

In the men’s premier summer knockout, Andy Fleming and Roger Brierly battled over 36 holes for the Meredith Cup.

It is rare the competition goes to the last hole all-square and after an even contest, there was a final moment of drama on the 36th.

Fleming played a fine approach to be down in five but Brierly’s chip finished 10 feet from the hole and having putted well, he sank the crucial shot to win.

The losing semi-finalists were Lee Whittall and John Whitehead.

The Rose Bowls match was tight with last year’s finalists Liz Lewis and Peter Hill meeting Marcia Macfarlane and Andy Dunster.

Lewis and Hill took an early lead but Macfarlane and Dunster, giving five strokes to their opponents, were never more than two holes down, levelling four times.

Standing one-up on the 18th, a fine tee-shot from Lewis was followed by a match-winning second effort onto the green by Hill.

Andy Turner and Jan Kirkland and Andy and April Greene were the losing semi-finalists.

Ex-club champion Jason Allies played superbly against senior Derry Hanratty in the Fiddian-Green Spoon final.

Hanratty fought to the 15th but, despite being in receipt of 10 strokes, lost 5&3 to Allies. The losing semi-finalists were Steve Bradshaw and Richard Sebok.

Division One’s Nigel Allam secured the Len Phipps Cup on count-back from Division Three’s Jon Lane with both scoring 39 stableford points.

Following Allam (12 handicap) home in Division One were Richard Higgs (11) and Bill Thomas (12) on 37.

Dave Turner (15) took Division Two on 37 ahead of Peter Jolley (14), Mark Williams (16) and Jim Wilde (15) on 35.

Barry Schofield (18) was second in Division Three with 36 followed by Edward Gaynor-Smith (23) and William Brimmell (23) on 33.

Di Wilde won the Silver Division of a ladies’ 18-hole stableford with 33 points in front of Jen Bishop on 32.

Lisa Digings took the Bronze Division with 29 on countback from Cynthia Guest and Jill Mico won the Copper Division with 29 ahead of Margaret Duncan.

Pauline Taylor won the nine-hole contest from Jenny Bunyan and Ann Goode with all on 15.

The Doug Cotton Rose Bowl saw an emphatic win for Lucy Walton with 71 nett ahead of Pat Rose on 83.

Fifty-two played the last of the seniors’ four tankard competitions.

Ray Cupitt won with 39 points ahead of Peter Bellamy and David Lloyd on 38.

Other winners in 2015 were Bill Urry (37), Mike Travis (40) and Peter Taylor (38).

The Worcestershire’s senior mixed open contest was a sell-out with a home pair taking the honours.

Sixty-four pairs from 30 clubs came from as far afield as the home counties for the Greensome contest.

While scores reflected the testing conditions, the runaway winners were The Worcestershire’s evergreen Stan Jones and Sharon Williams with 41 points.

T and D Davis from Naunton Downs were second with 38 ahead of J Rowett and B Howe (Buckingham) on 36, T and B Platt (Coventry) on 35 and Ralph and Elsie Kelsall (The Worcestershire) on 35.

Meanwhile, Ledbury 16-year-old Sophie Price is ladies’ club champion at Ross-on-Wye.

The juniors’ captain faced Sarah Forrest in the final and her opponent putted well over a close opening 18 holes with the match all-square.

While both drew inspiration from birdies at their 21st hole, Price found added mental strength to win 8&6.

Price’s successful season saw her handicap tumble from 16 to eight.

The 36-hole final to determine the men’s champion saw Dave Gardner deny James Dobbs back-to-back wins.
